A Test Knitter’s Review

As an avid knitter, I always jump at the opportunity to be a test knitter for a new and exciting pattern. The Floral Doodle Cowl by Pacific Knit Co. promised to be just that – an adventure in modular colorwork featuring charming flowers that bloom all over the city of Seattle, Washington. The pattern is designed with the option to mix and match the 27 doodle charts (provided) to create a beautifully knitted cowl with endless possibilities.

Pattern Overview

The Floral Doodle Cowl has two pattern options – Infinity and Single Sided. The Infinity Cowl allows for a double sided view. I tested the standard version of the Single Sided Cowl, size large. This project is the perfect stash buster. While the pattern is written for DK, light worsted or sport weight yarn, it is possible to substitute the these options for other yarn weights. You will need to create a swatch to check the gauge before knitting your cowl.

Tips for Success

01

Allow time for planning

There are 27 doodle charts included in the pattern. Select the 5-7 doodle charts that you would like to use for the pattern.

02

Factor alteration in planning if needed

This project can be completed with yarn weights not listed above. Take the time to create a swatch if you are not using DK, light worsted or sport weight yarn. The gauge swatch is 24 stitches and 24 rows = 4″, or 10cm in colorwork.

03

Practice makes perfect

This pattern uses 2×2 ribbed knitting at the top and bottom of the cowl. If this is your first time using this technique – practice, practice, practice – before knitting this project, This technique gives a clean and professional finish. Let me know in the comments if you would like a tutorial on 2×2 ribbed knitting.

04

Did you measure?

Measure your ribbed edges and colorwork to ensure that they meet the measurements included in the pattern. I initially eyeballed it, but noticed that the ribbed edge was too long and had to frog it to take out a few rows including the colorwork.

05

Leave no tails behind

Follow the tutorials provided to knit your contrast color tails as you go. This will save you time in the end and creates a professional finish. Do not cut the tails of the main fabric until you block your final project.

06

Block your final project

Want a professional finish? Be sure to block the final project. It is worth the extract time it takes to block and dry before taking care of the tails on your ribbed ends.

Artistry Meets Functionality

As a test knitter, I had the opportunity to provide feedback on the pattern, and I’m please to report that the final version is exceptionally well-written. The instructions are clear and the charts are easy to read. Pacific Knit Co. also offers excellent pattern support, so if you encounter any issues or have questions, you’re in good hands.
